Disney Cruise: Good service except for some good laughs Tue, 10 Aug 2010(Theme Park Ranger Matt Palm is beating the end-of-summer blues by reminiscing about his Disney Cruise Line vacation earlier this year.)
The 'Beauty & the Beast' wall at Lumiere's restaurant aboard the Disney Magic.
Disney is known far and wide for its level of service, in its theme parks, its hotels and onboard the cruise line. With one notable exception, our cruise — the 10-day Mediterranean Disney cruise about the Disney Magic — did not disappoint.
Our room steward made us laugh on a daily basis with his whimsical “towel art.” More important, he checked in with us personally, making sure the room was being serviced to our liking.
At dinner, our primary waiter was a joy. Not only would he switch side items and bring samples, as many waiters do, he could actually describe the food to us and give us precise opinions on it.
Our assistant waiter, however, was another story. And we felt sorry for our primary waiter, who had to work harder than he should have. The assistant waiter never could seem to take the drink orders in a timely way. And then, he’d often confuse who was drinking what. Even stranger, if alcoholic drinks were purchased, he’d often mix up who got what bill. It wasn’t that big a table and he knew our names, so that perplexed us.
The worst though was when he dropped my companion’s dessert fork into my lap accidentally. That, of course, is forgivable; it happens. But then he reached down into my lap and retrieved it. And then put it back at my friend’s place setting and moved on.
By this point in the cruise we were used to his odd ways, so we laughed it off. And I used that fork, and gave my friend my clean one. But, still … strange.
If he didn’t provide the best service, he did provide something else important: Memories that we still laugh about.
