A toddler’s first haircut is one of those milestones parents usually remember with photos and a lock of hair pressed into a baby book. Where the haircut takes place, though, is up for grabs.
Disney fans can mark the occasion at the Harmony Barber Shop on Main Street, U.S.A., in the Magic Kingdom. Tucked between the fire station and the Emporium, the shop is easy to miss if you’re not looking for it. This week, though, I was invited inside to watch my friends’ son undergo the rite of passage.
Like many kids, the little boy was a tad nervous about being in a new place, and he especially didn’t want to let go of Dad to sit in the big-boy chair. That was no problem, though, for our stylist, Penny. First, she tried to coax smiles with bubbles and light-up toys. Once the little guy was no longer crying, Penny began cutting his hair while he remained secure in Dad’s arms.
Many stylists would insist the child or parent must be seated, but Penny just talked gently to him and got the job done, making it a happy Disney memory for the family. Afterward, the little boy received a “first haircut” certificate, Mickey ears hat and, of course, the lock of hair.
Reservations for Harmony Barber Shop are recommended and can be booked up to 180 days in advance by calling 407-939-3463. Payment or credit card guarantee is required at the time of booking, and there is a one-day $10 cancellation policy. (Baby’s First Haircut package is $19 plus tax.) Walk-ups are welcome if there are openings.
Harmony Barber Shop also offers haircuts with styling that includes colorful hair gels and pixie dust for girls and pirate dust for boys. Guests must arrive with clean, dry hair because no shampoo bowls are available. Haircuts for children up to age 9 are $15 plus tax and 10 and older are $18 plus tax. Those 17 and younger must have a parent present.
Guests also can choose styling (no cut) with colored gel and confetti for $7.50 or styling with pixie or pirate dust for $5. Park admission is required for appointments at Harmony Barber Shop.
